Hamburger Cupcakes


Ok, so I am NOT a baker.  If I ever try something from Pinterest, it ends up a disaster.  But, I have to say, these turned out even cuter than I thought they would!  There was a learning curve, so I thought I’d share my version of how this went.  I bought the following cake and brownie mixes:

They suggest you bake the cupcakes without liners so that they look more like buns.  My first batch ended up with super pointy tops and burnt bottoms.  So, I sprayed the bottom with just a bit of Pam, and I shook the pan so that the batter was flat on the top.  Then, I lowered the temp to 325 and baked for 14 minutes.  I know that everyone’s ovens are different, so you might have to adjust for yours.  I baked the brownies with wax paper, thinking it would keep them from sticking and make them easier to get out of the pan.  I was WRONG.  For some reason, the wax paper stuck to the brownies, making them difficult to get off.  I suggest baking them in a nonstick pan without the wax paper.  I used a 2 inch circle cutter to make the circles.

You must wait for everything to cool completely before taking it out of the pan.  Be careful getting the cupcakes out, because there will be parts that stick a bit.  I used a spoon and went around all the edges first.

I used pre-made icing in tubes to ensure that it would have the bright color I was looking for.  I bought plastic tips that you can screw directly onto the tubes.  I got the icing from Michael’s.  The toothpicks are from the Party Store.  I used a bowl of flour to help with the stickiness of the cupcakes and to make them look a bit more like hamburger buns.

Some recipes called for chocolate cupcakes for the “meat,” but I thought brownies would hold together better.

Then, I cut the cupcakes in half-ish (the top was a little smaller than the bottom).  First I did the green around the edge for the lettuce:

Next, the ketchup and mustard:

And finally, the “bun” on the top.  Stick in the toothpick and you’re done!

I tasted all the components, but not all together yet.  I’ll have to let you know how they are after tonight!
